That applied to me completely yesterday. For some reason Alex's Spring break starting yesterday didn't connect with the fact it was Good Friday. So after discovering upper 80s temps would be here, I decided that would be the perfect day to go to the zoo. Unfortunately so did half of North Carolina. The drive was wonderful, and took only an hour. But once in Asheboro and in the left lane to turn down on Zoo Parkway trouble started. It took us an hour to travel about 6 miles! And then we were denied handicap! (I had my Grandparents Jacksons with us and Grandpa is in a wheelchair.) And almost ALL of the handicap spaces were open! I even had the handicap hanger in the window! Ok enough about that. After hiking to the zoo entrance and standing in a short line to renew our zoo membership, and get Grandma to buy her and Grandpa one. We headed towards the bridge to the entrance. I felt so bad for all those hundreds of families waiting in the regular line to get day passes. We breezed right past and into the zoo.
By this time it was getting on to lunch time. So we started waiting in line to hope on the tram to take us to the 'junction.' And I must admit there are a few great things about traveling with a wheelchair. We got to jump to the front the the line and get on the tram first! As I mentioned before half of NC was there, so you can imagine the lines for food. LONG! But we survived and found a piece of cement floor to call our table.
Then time of the uphill climb! But the downhill was even more fun! We choose to take the shortest uphill climb, and we were glad. We all had a blast seeing all the North American animals. The only time it was hard was in the buildings. Masses of people, and that means a few rude people who like to purposefully stand in front of a stroller so baby can't see. GRR. But there were LOTS of wonderful people who held doors open for our small caravan, to them I couldn't say thank you enough. All three kids LOVED to watch the seals and sea lions swimming around, and Grandma and I were grateful. We got to take a decent break from pushing. The sea lions were hams too. Swimming every so slow right in front of the glass, and then darting off.
Abby Sue was an absolute doll baby this whole time. She was hot and sweaty. Took only a few short cat naps in the sit and stand stroller. And hardly every complained! Of course her and Teagan were asleep before we were out of the parking lot. I did discover a short cut! So instead of an hour+ trying to get out of the zoo it was only 30 minutes! That was pretty wonderful. I feel sorry for all those poor folks who waited and waited to get out of that deadly slow 6ish miles. One of the best parts about where our zoo is located is that there is a cook out a block over from Zoo Parkway.
For anyone who doesn't know cook out has AWESOME burgers, onion rings, fries, and most importantly milkshakes! So we stopped for milkshakes, and boy where they wonderful. As Teagan, he kept begging for more. Then after the hour drive home, we picked up Dad and met Grandpa and Grandma at a new favorite Mexican resturant, Los Portales, I do hope I'm spelling it right. Abby Sue was still a wonderful doll baby. Though I didn't make her sit in her highchair. Instead she sort of cruised and danced in the chair between Joseph and I. That was fun cause she would cruise over to one parent and give super tight hugs. Then cruise over to the other and repeat. She did fall of once, but that was cause I got up to go. She didn't hurt herself, it was more of shock. I must admit she got a couple of waiters wrapped around her finger.
So even though my timing was off, we had a wonderful day. And can't wait to return again, but just not on a holiday.
